Liverpool make u-turn over decision to put staff on furlough

Liverpool have officially announced their intention to pay staff in full after originally making the decision to use the UK government’s furlough scheme.

Liverpool have made a u-turn over their decision to place the non-playing staff on furlough amidst the ongoing pandemic.
The Reds have been under intense criticism since announcing that they will place their non-playing staff on furlough, leaving the government to pay 80% of their wages.
Liverpool were among five clubs including Tottenham, Newcastle, Norwich and Bournemouth to have made such moves with the public heaping a huge discontent on those actions.
Many claim the Reds have ample resources to still pay all staff in full and showed a lack of class by resorting to that line of action.
After much deliberation, Liverpool have now announced they will be taking back that action and will now pay staff in full.
Liverpool CEO Peter Moore sent out an open statement to fans via their official website.
The statement read:

“Dear Liverpool supporters,
“First and foremost on behalf of our ownership, Fenway Sports Group, we would like to emphasise the thoughts and concerns of everyone are with those suffering from the dreadful COVID-19 pandemic and the families of those affected.
“We would also recognise and pay tribute to the heroism of the incredible health service and key workers locally, nationally and internationally. All other worries should be placed in that context first.
“Allowing for perspective in these unprecedented and harrowing times, it is important to address an issue we, as an organisation, have been involved in since the weekend.
“Liverpool have consulted with a range of key stakeholders as part of a process aimed at achieving the best possible outcome for all concerned.”
“A range of possible scenarios were considered, including but not restricted to: applying to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which pays 80 per cent of salary and guaranteeing the 20 per cent payment; applying to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme with a guarantee to reimburse monies received at a later date; and, thirdly, finding an alternative means to cover our furlough costs.”
Fair play to Liverpool for making the right choice in the end.
